Neurophysiology Of Pain
Pain is an output of the brain. It’s altered by thoughts, emotions, and attitudes. The level of pain a person perceives is closely related to the level of threat they feel, whether this be real or perceived. These non-physical components can help the brain “learn” to be in pain, re-wiring the body’s neural circuitry to perpetuate the sensation of pain.
When pain becomes chronic, it’s no longer coming from tissue damage or trauma. The primary cause is a sensitive nervous system, affected by how the brain processes heightened nerve responses in the context of the environment. That’s why a biopsychosocial approach to assessment and management alongside Pain Neuroscience Education is essential.
The ability of the brain and nervous system to adapt and change is called neuroplasticity.
Brain training therapies based on neuroplasticity help the brain “unlearn ” pain, paving the way to physical pain relief. Using education, writing, meditation, visualization, mindfulness, emotional and trauma release and cognitive behavioural therapy can help the brain to break this pain cycle.
PAIN TREATMENT THERAPIES

Fibromyalgia
Other conditions commonly coexist: anxiety, chronic fatigue syndrome, digestive problems, IBS, TMJ, irritable bladder, hormonal imbalances like thyroid disease and endometriosis. Most of these conditions share underlying mechanisms in the brain, nervous system and gut-brain axis function so I use similar investigations to identify underlying causes addressing all contributing factors and coexisting conditions and symptoms holistically.
My own struggle with fibromyalgia, triggered by adrenal burnout in 1996, fueled me to become a naturopath.
After being told it was all in my head, just get over it, learn to live with it, I sought help and found resolution through holistic mind-body treatment. It’s now my mission to share my knowledge, experience and expertise so others can recover and I enjoy life again.
